RESIDENTIAL SOLAR PV & ENERGY STORAGE
A private, 53KW ground-mounted solar photovoltaic and energy storage system
Project Location: Lancaster, SC
Project Role: Engineering & Design
Project Highlights
- Large residential PV and energy storage system provides energy for the entire 12,000 square foot home.
- Self-consumption, non-export design means that all energy produced is either used or stored. Nothing is sold back to the local utility or placed back on the grid.
- A custom controls system was designed to prioritize solar PV, battery, generator and utility energy sources.
- 154 Hanwha solar PV modules rated 345W each produce a total of 53.12kW DC.
- Seven SMA PV inverters rated 6kW each produce a total of 42kW AC.
- Nine 13.5kW-h Tesla Powerwalls allow for excess PV energy to be stored for use throughout the night.
- Local utility grid is used as a backup source of power for the home. A natural gas generator is also used if the utility grid is unavailable.
- Provisions installed for second phase of project to include up to a total of 106kW of PV modules and ten Tesla Poweralls.
- Large distance between ground-mounted solar PV modules and the home provided voltage rise challenges.
- 240V split-phase was the only local power source available. This provided challenges with product selection for a system of this size.
